Wisner-Pilger Boys beat Pender and Clarkson/Leigh; Girls fall to both

The Wisner-Pilger Boys Basketball Team won 47-39 at home over Pender Thursday night, and 61-39 at home over Clarkson/Leigh Tuesday night.

The Gators jumped out to a 20-6 lead on the Pendragons at the end of one before Pender outscored Wisner-Pilger 13-4 in the 2nd quarter to make it a 24-19 game at halftime in favor of the Gators.

Wisner-Pilger won the 3rd quarter 13-10 to go up 37-29 at the end of three.

Both teams scored 10 points in the 4th quarter.

The Gators led the Patriots 14-12 after one before winning the 2nd quarter 12-8 to take a 26-20 lead into the locker room.

Wisner-Pilger opened things up in the 3rd quarter, outscoring Clarkson/Leigh 24-11 to go up 50-31 at the end of three.

The Gators won the 4th quarter 11-8.

Very good start against Pender and a strong finish against the Patriots.

Wisner-Pilger (12-4) takes on North Bend Central (14-1) on the road Thursday night.

The Tigers blasted Madison 85-39 on the road Tuesday night.

North Bend Central has played really good, consistent basketball all season long.

The Gators definitely have their work cut out for them in this one and on Saturday against the Pendragons in the East Husker Conference Tournament.

We're starting to get down to the nitty gritty, and this is the time where Wisner-Pilger wants to play lights out.

Beating the Tigers will be really tough, especially on their home floor.

The Gators have to give it their all though and lay and leave everything out on the line and floor.

Should Wisner-Pilger lose, they have to use the loss as motivation and fuel to the fire, and work even that much harder for a potential rematch with North Bend Central in the EHC Tournament.

The Gators have a tough draw in the tournament in Pender, and a tough slate of games coming up, but they also have the winningest Head Coach in Nebraska High School Boys Basketball History on their side.

Wisner-Pilger won't be scared of or intimated by the Tigers or anyone else for that matter, and won't back down from any challenge.

I'm sure the Gators would love a rematch with Howells-Dodge too after losing to them last Friday.

Wisner-Pilger has to focus on the task at hand right now though, and that is beating North Bend Central.

The Gators have to go into North Bend expecting good results and expecting to win.

Wisner-Pilger needs to play a complete four quarter game to have a chance to knock off the Tigers I feel.

If the Gators either start slow or don't finish the game strong then it could spell doom for them.

Wisner-Pilger is definitely capable of picking up the win, but they need to play great.

The Gators have to get after it defensively and defend the three-point line, and light things up on the offensive end as well.

If Wisner-Pilger can do those things well then they might be able to win.

The Wisner-Pilger Girls lost 55-33 at home to Pender Thursday night, and 40-30 at home to Clarkson/Leigh Tuesday night.

The Pendragons went up 11-4 at the end of one, and outscored the Gators 19-7 in the 2nd quarter to take a 30-11 lead into the locker room.

Wisner-Pilger won the 3rd quarter 16-15 make it a 45-27 game at the end of three.

Pender won the 4th quarter 10-6.

Both the Gators and Patriots scored 11 points in the 1st quarter. Clarkson/Leigh outscored Wisner-Pilger 11-4 in the 2nd quarter to take a 22-15 lead into the locker room.

The Patriots outscored the Gators 14-5 in the 3rd quarter to go up 36-20 at the end of three.

Wisner-Pilger won the 4th quarter 10-4.

I thought the Gators played well for a quarter in each game.

Wisner-Pilger (5-12) takes on North Bend Central (11-6) on the road Thursday night.

The Tigers won 70-27 at Madison Tuesday night.

North Bend Central appears to have gotten their offense kicked into gear, and you know the Tigers play great, sound, fundamental defense.

I don't think there's any doubt the Gators have to step things up offensively to be able to win this one.

Wisner-Pilger has really struggled lately, losing three in a row and six out of their last seven, while North Bend Central has won three in a row and four out of their last five.

The Tigers are definitely playing their best basketball of the season and are peaking at the right time, and that's something the Gators need to figure out how to do yet.

Wisner-Pilger plays Stanton in the first round of the East Husker Conference Tournament Friday night, and the Gators already beat the Mustangs once this season.

So Wisner-Pilger knows they can beat Stanton, and wins over North Bend Central and Stanton would perhaps get things turned around and headed in the right direction for the Gators.

It won't be easy though, but tide and momentum can change and turn at any given time.

This girls EHC Tournament is loaded, and who knows what the quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals will look like.

I don't think it's a tournament where you can say the No. 1 and 2 seeds are locks for the championship game.

A second upset of Stanton at Clarkson/Leigh would really shake things up, and Wisner-Pilger has to be up to the task of trying to beat the rival Mustangs again.

The Gators have to focus on and worry about the Tigers first though.

I don't know if Wisner-Pilger can beat Stanton again unless they either beat or at least play well against North Bend Central.

So I would say this game against the Tigers is key, critical, and crucial to any potential EHC success the Gators are going to have.

Wisner-Pilger needs to keep things low scoring and at a slow grind, and if they can win that way or at least keep things close and competitive in that way then perhaps they can play the same type of game against the Mustangs on Friday and win.

Funny things often happen in the game of Basketball, especially this time of year, and so the Gators have to be optimistic and hopeful at the very least.
