Oakland-Craig Boys lose to BRLD, beat Tekamah-Herman; Girls defeat both
The Oakland-Craig Boys Basketball Team lost 62-51 at home to BRLD Friday night in action aired on 107.9 the Bull before winning 72-34 at Tekamah-Herman Tuesday night.
BRLD led 9-7 at the end of one. Oakland-Craig won the 2nd quarter 15-14 to make it a 23-22 game at halftime in favor of the Wolverines.
The Wolverines outscored the Knights 19-13 in the 3rd quarter to take a 42-35 lead at the end of three.
BRLD won the 4th quarter 20-16.
Oakland-Craig was led in scoring by Colton Thomsen, who notched 12 points. Jared Mulder and Gunnar Ray each had 8 points apiece.
Head Coach Aaron Meyer says his teams did a lot of good things despite the loss. "One of those games where it came out to be a defensive battle at first, and then all of a sudden both teams kind of cranked it up and hit some shots. And we just wanted to hang around and we did that. Ended up hitting a buzzer beater at halftime to get within 1. Told the guys it's really important that we get this lead. Got to get over that hump. And I was proud of them, they got the lead, and as soon as we got that it was like oh we took a break. And you just can't do that, you got to keep playing. And Vogt and Snyder came up, and just as soon as we got that lead they hit some 3's. And good teams are going to battle back like that and try to take the lead away. And we kind of ran out of gas there for a little bit."
The Knights led the Tigers 18-1 at the end of the 1st quarter. Oakland-Craig outscored Tekamah-Herman 27-6 in the 2nd quarter to take a 45-7 lead into the locker room.
The Knights outscored the Tigers 15-7 in the 3rd quarter to lead 60-14 at the end of three.
Tekamah-Herman outscored Oakland-Craig 20-12 in the 4th quarter.
Great win for the Knights Tuesday night, and a good hard fought game played on Friday I felt.
Oakland-Craig (9-7) takes on North Bend Central (12-1) on the road Thursday night.
The Tigers romped Columbus Scotus 69-49 at home Tuesday night.
This game was supposed to be played on Friday, but was moved up due to the impending weather.
I feel the Knights will be ready to challenge and give North Bend Central all they can want and handle and then some though.
This was a great game in Oakland last year, and I feel this year's game can be close and competitive too.
The Knights definitely have their work cut out for them trying to beat North Bend in North Bend though.
The Tigers are having a special season, one to remember.
Oakland-Craig has to play fearless though, and must take the fight to North Bend Central for four quarters.
The Knights have to get out and run, and try and get in a track meet with the Tigers.
I feel Oakland-Craig is more than capable of knocking off North Bend Central, but it won't be easy.
The Knights have less time to prepare and less time to rest.
Oakland-Craig has to come out and play hard and give it their all though.
The Knights simply need to build on what they did Tuesday night.
The Tekamah-Herman game was a dominant performance on both ends of the floor without a doubt.
Oakland-Craig needs that type of performance against North Bend Central Thursday night.
The Knights have to come out and be ready to give the Tigers their best shot.
North Bend Central is as hot as anyone right now though as they have won 8 straight so it certainly won't be easy to beat them.
Oakland-Craig has to play with no fear and nothing to lose though.
The Knights should play pressure and nerve free against the Tigers knowing that too.
The Oakland-Craig Girls won 60-50 at home over BRLD Friday night in action aired on 107.9 the Bull before winning 62-38 at Tekamah-Herman Tuesday night.
Oakland-Craig got out to a 13-12 lead at the end of one on the Wolverines before winning the 2nd quarter 16-11 to take a 29-23 lead into the locker room.
The Knights outscored BRLD 14-8 in the 3rd quarter to extend their lead to 43-31 at the end of three.
The Wolverines won the 4th quarter 19-17.
Head Coach Joe Anderson on the win. "It was fun getting everybody back out there together tonight. And we did some really good things. I was pleased with our defense. We came out at halftime and really played much better halfcourt defense and executed better. And we were able to extend that lead I think 47-31. I think we held them to 8 points in the 3rd quarter, start of the 4th. We'd like to be able to keep pushing and extend that lead a little bit, but credit them, they're a very good basketball team, and they got a bunch of girls that can put the ball in the basket. That's what we see on film is they got a bunch of great shooters, and if you leave them they're going to hurt you. And they did that. They did a nice job, and our girls kept their composure and found a way to get it done."
Dacey Nelson led all players with 29 points and had 8 rebounds while Ashley Denton and Kennedy Benne chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively. Jeannina Blahak added 10 rebounds while Mya Guzinski posted 7.
The Knights led the Tigers 14-12 after one. Oakland-Craig outscored Tekamah-Herman 16-5 in the 2nd quarter to take a 30-17 lead into the locker room.
The Knights outscored the Tigers 21-13 in the 3rd quarter to go up 51-30 at the end of three.
Oakland-Craig won the 4th quarter 11-8.
Nelson had 14 points for the Knights.
Nice wins for Oakland-Craig. The Knights are truly a great and remarkable team.
Oakland-Craig (14-0) takes on North Bend Central (9-6) on the road Thursday night.
The Tigers won 38-24 at home over Columbus Scotus Tuesday night.
This game was supposed to be played on Friday, but was moved up due to the impending weather.
The Knights have to come out and play the way they did in the middle quarters against Tekamah-Herman for four quarters.
Outside of maybe the BRLD game, I don't know if Oakland-Craig has really put together a whole four quarter game.
The Knights are 14-0 and playing really well, they're a great team, but I just don't feel Oakland-Craig has reached their full potential yet.
And that's okay too because you don't necessarily want to be peaking right now.
The Knights want to be playing their best basketball towards the end of the regular season and when the postseason rolls around.
Oakland-Craig has a big weekend with a game against Gretna scheduled for Saturday also.
The Knights have to come out and play hard and smart from the start, and must press and run on the Tigers for four quarters.
Both teams play great defense, but I think Oakland-Craig's offense could very well be the difference in this one.
The Knights figure to get North Bend Central's best shot and everyone else's from here on out though.
But Oakland-Craig knows what's at stake so I don't know if they necessarily need any extra motivation or anything.
The Knights have to come out and play better than they did against Tekamah-Herman though.
Not that Oakland-Craig played bad, I mean give Tekamah-Herman a lot of credit, but the Knights need to be even more dominate than they were in that game I feel.
At the end of the day though all that matters is that you win, and as long as Oakland-Craig wins on Thursday I think they will be happy and take it.
The Knights figure to be the number one seed in the East Husker Conference Tournament, but games against the Dragons and Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family certainly figure to impact that.
