West Point-Beemer Boys lose to Wisner-Pilger and BRLD; Girls down Gators, lose to Wolverines
The West Point-Beemer Boys Basketball Team lost 50-45 at Wisner-Pilger Friday night and 43-33 at home to BRLD on Saturday.
The Gators led 12-11 after one before the Cadets won the 2nd quarter 12-11 to tie the game at 23 at halftime.
Wisner-Pilger doubled up West Point-Beemer 10-5 in the 3rd quarter to go up 33-28 at the end of three.
Both teams scored 17 points in the 4th quarter.
Ben Vander Griend had 14 points to lead the way while Jesus Barragan and Zach Vander Griend each had 11. Blake Anderson posted 7 points and 7 rebounds.
The Wolverines went up 13-8 after one, and won the 2nd quarter 4-3 to take a 17-11 lead into the locker room.
BRLD outscored the Cadets 16-13 in the 3rd quarter to go up 33-24 at the end of three.
The Wolverines won the 4th quarter 10-9.
Anderson had 10 points and 8 rebounds while Keegan Doggett totaled 9 points. Ben Vander Griend added 7.
I thought West Point-Beemer competed really well over the weekend. Wisner-Pilger and BRLD are two very good teams.
The Cadets (4-5) host Battle Creek (5-4) Tuesday night.
The Braves won 62-41 at home over Crofton Thursday night.
I feel this game could really go either way, and think things will be very tight and close.
Battle Creek lost to Wisner-Pilger by 24 so it will be interesting to see what happens.
I give West Point-Beemer the edge with the Cadets being at home.
I think the Cadets played well over the weekend, and will be very hungry and anxious for a win and to get back out there on Tuesday.
West Point-Beemer has to build on the things they did well against Wisner-Pilger nad BRLD, and correct any mistakes made.
Anderson, Ben Vander Griend, Barragan, Zach Vander Griend, and Doggett need to perform the way they did offensively against the Gators and Wolverines.
The Cadets seem to have gotten things figured out some defensively, now it's a matter of getting the offense back up to snuff.
West Point-Beemer has to attack the basket and get to the free throw line as well as shoot lights out from the outside.
The Cadets have to play with a sense of urgency and toughness Tuesday night, and must take the fight to the Braves.
West Point-Beemer has two games coming up later this week they should win big so if the Cadets can get this one against Battle Creek I think they could find themselves with a 7-5 record heading into next Friday's game against Twin River.
West Point-Beemer has to continue to battle and fight hard no matter what, and must never give up.
The Cadets played well on Friday and Saturday, and did a lot of good and nice things I thought.
Now it's matter of turning those moral victories into wins this week.
West Point-Beemer lost twice last week, now it's time to win three this week.
The Cadets can definitely do it too, but this first game against the Braves is key to making it happen.
The West Point-Beemer Girls saw mixed results over the weekend as the Cadets dominated Wisner-Pilger 60-19 on the road Friday night before falling 49-33 at home to BRLD on Saturday.
West Point-Beemer spurted out to a 20-2 lead on the Gators at the end of one, and outscored Wisner-Pilger 15-4 in the 2nd quarter to take a 35-6 lead into the locker room.
The Cadets won the 3rd quarter 13-8 to go up 48-14 at the end of three.
West Point-Beemer outscored the Gators 12-5 in the 4th quarter.
Sierra Kile led the way with 15 points while Sidney Swanson totaled 10. Brooklyn Weddle and Abby Kaup notched 8 apiece.
The Wolverines went up 8-4 at the end of one, and won the 2nd quarter 15-13 to take a 23-17 lead into the locker room.
BRLD outscored the Cadets 12-2 in the 3rd quarter to go up 35-19 at the end of three.
Both teams scored 14 points in the 4th quarter.
Sidney Swanson had a team-high 16 points while Abbey Dale and Kile chipped in 9 and 8 rebounds, respectively.
I can't say I saw a loss to the Wolverines coming, especially given the way the Cadets played Friday night and had been playing, but credit BRLD for having a good game plan, going triangle and two on defense.
West Point-Beemer (10-1) looks to rebound at home against Battle Creek (7-3) Tuesday night.
The Bravettes won 63-45 at Norfolk Catholic Friday night.
Very tough game for the Cadets.
It will be interesting to see how West Point-Beemer responds to their first loss of the season.
Do the Cadets bounce back and win or do their woes continue?
I think that's hard to say and answer as I feel this game could go either way.
If West Point-Beemer is on they're going to be a tough out, but if it's like Saturday when the Cadets struggled to hit shots then it could be another tough night for them.
West Point-Beemer has two games coming up later this week they should win regardless of how Tuesday night goes, but you want to win every time you take to the floor, and this game with Battle Creek is huge.
The Cadets must have a quick memory and must forget about what took place on Saturday.
Teams are going to lose games from time to time, it's just a part of the game.
How a team bounces back and responds is what ultimately defines them, in my opinion.
West Point-Beemer has to put the BRLD loss in the rearview mirror and focus on beating the Bravettes.
Hopefully the loss to the Wolverines is out of the Cadets' system by game time because West Point-Beemer can't dwell on the defeat.
All of West Point-Beemer's goals are still in front of them, and one loss doesn't define this team.
I think the Cadets will be stronger for having been beaten by the Wolverines as they now know anyone can be beaten on any given night, and they have to bring their best night in and night out.
I look for the loss to BRLD to only strengthen and bring this team closer together.
I think you will see West Point-Beemer come out and play well Tuesday night, and show everyone why they won their first 10 games to start the season.
A 13-1 record after this week would be really good, but 12-2 wouldn't be too shabby either.
