GACC Boys 0-3 in last three games; Girls 2-1
The Guardian Angels Central Catholic Boys Basketball Team lost 57-53 at Wayne Friday night before falling 87-64 at Boone Central/Newman Grove on Saturday and 54-52 at Battle Creek Tuesday night in action aired on 107.9 the Bull.
The Bluejays and Blue Devils were tied at 10 at the end of one before GACC won the 2nd quarter to go up 26-25 at halftime.
Wayne outscored the Bluejays 15-7 in the 3rd quarter to go up 40-33 at the end of three.
GACC won the 4th quarter 20-17.
The Bluejays led the Cardinals 23-22 after one. Boone Central/Newman Grove won the 2nd quarter 14-10 to go up 36-33 at halftime.
The Cardinals outscored the Bluejays 32-10 in the 3rd quarter to extend their lead to 68-43 at the end of three.
GACC won the 4th quarter 21-19.
GACC got out to a lead in the first quarter on the Braves before Battle Creek went up 16-15 after one.
The Braves won the 2nd quarter 14-11 to take a 30-26 lead into the locker room.
Battle Creek opened up a 10-point 3rd quarter lead, starting the period on a 6-0 run to go up 36-26 before the Bluejays outscored the Braves 16-9 the rest of the quarter to close within 3 at 45-42 at the end of three.
Ben Ulrich had a chance to win it at the buzzer, but a three-pointer was errant and came up short as Battle Creek hung on for the win.
Ulrich led all scorers with 25 points and was the S&W Welding Player of the Game for the Bluejays. Cody Steffen added 10 while Nate Niewohner and Adam Reeson totaled 8 and 7, respectively.
Reeson was the Chartwest Bank Sportsmanship Award Winner.
GACC Head Coach Alex Stieren says Ulrich was feeling it. "Ben's been on the last couple of games, he's really come in big for us. And it's one of those things that we make sure when kids shoot that most of time we know most of them can make it, and we just keep after them, keep shooting, keep shooting, they'll start falling. And fortunately for Ben they started falling."
I feel the Bluejays are getting closer to getting over the hump. GACC has had a lot of close losses as of late. This team is still very young.
GACC falls to 2-11 on the year and travels to O'Neill (5-8) on Thursday.
The Eagles won 47-38 at home over Wagner, SD Tuesday night.
This game was supposed to be played on Friday, but was moved up due to the impending weather.
I really think the Bluejays are prime and due to breakthrough and pick up a win on Thursday.
I thought GACC played inspired basketball on Tuesday, especially without the services of Jared Minnick, who was sick.
If the Bluejays have him back and/or play like that again on Thursday I feel they stand a great chance to win.
This team is getting there, they are just very young.
I thought GACC did a lot of nice things last night, and really did an excellent job competing and hanging with Battle Creek.
The Bluejays were one shot away from a win, and that has to carry over into Thursday night.
Both teams will be playing on short rest, and I think that could really be in GACC's favor.
I look for the Bluejays to step up and play a good game on Thursday.
GACC has to find a way to get over the hump in these close games though.
The Bluejays have done an excellent job competing and putting themselves in a position to win games now it's a matter of going out there and making it happen.
GACC is also scheduled to play Hartington Cedar Catholic on Saturday at home so we'll see how the Bluejays fare this weekend.
The focus right now has to be on the Eagles though.
GACC has to go up there and play another good, sound game like they did Tuesday night.
I feel the future is bright for the Bluejays with a lot of opportunities for wins out there this season yet.
GACC has to play with the same aggression, tenacity, and toughness they played with Tuesday night.
If the Bluejays do that they can definitely beat the Eagles, in my opinion.
The GACC Girls lost 80-51 at home to Bishop Neumann last Tuesday night before winning 69-45 at Boone Central/Newman Grove on Saturday, and a 67-66 thriller at Battle Creek Tuesday night in action aired on 107.9 the Bull.
The Cavaliers led the Bluejays 16-12 at the end of one and outscored GACC 23-11 in the 2nd quarter to take a 39-23 lead into the locker room.
The Bluejays won the 3rd quarter 16-12 to make it a 51-39 game at the end of three.
Neumann outscored GACC 29-12 in the 4th quarter.
Sophia Hass had a team-high 15 points while Erica Engelmeyer chipped in 8.
The Bluejays went up 18-11 at the end of one on the Cardinals before winning the 2nd quarter 17-11 to take a 35-22 lead into the locker room.
GACC outscored Boone Central/Newman Grove 16-14 in the 3rd quarter to lead 51-36 at the end of three.
The Bluejays doubled up the Cardinals 18-9 in the 4th quarter.
Hass had 11 points while Ally Plagge and Brenna Rief notched 10 apiece. Angela Jansen totaled 8 while Marissa Hunke registered 7.
The Bluejays staked claim to a 9-3 lead on the Bravettes before Battle Creek battled back and took the lead before GACC regained it again to go up 17-14 at the end of one.
Both teams put up 17 points in the 2nd quarter, and the halftime score was 34-31 in favor of the Bluejays.
The Bravettes won the 3rd quarter 16-14 to make it a 48-47 game at the end of three.
GACC eventually got up 64-61 in the 4th quarter before the game was tied at 64 and 66.
Plagge knocked down a free throw at the end of the game to provide the difference for the Bluejays.
Battle Creek had a couple of chances underneath their own basket in the final seconds, but a last second shot by Riley Seifert came after the buzzer, securing the win for GACC.
Hass paced GACC with a team-high 19 points. Teammate Maddie Bracht added 18 while Jansen chipped in 14.
Head Coach Jerry Stracke says it was a wild back and forth affair. "We knew coming into the game that they were going to get some easy baskets against us. And at the end we were able to knock down some free throws. I mean they had their chances to win. And we're very fortunate to come away with the win."
The Bluejays improve to 12-3 on the season and take on O'Neill (10-4) on the road Thursday night.
The Eagles have won 6 in a row, including a 69-48 win at home over Wagner, SD Tuesday night.
This is going to be another tough test for GACC.
The Bluejays are coming off a really hard fought, emotional win, and sometimes that can take a lot out of you.
GACC just has to be refocused and re-energized and ready to go.
I think the Bluejays find a way to win once again Thursday night.
While O'Neill has been impressive, I don't think they've played the caliber of opponents GACC has.
The Eagles won 70-62 in overtime at Boone Central/Newman Grove, and while that's impressive, the Bluejays dominated the Cardinals.
It will be interesting to see how GACC comes out given their emotional game on Tuesday.
The Bluejays are facing short rest, and are also scheduled to play Hartington Cedar Catholic on Saturday.
Definitely a tough road to hoe for GACC, but if there's a team that's up to the task of winning and getting the job done it's the Bluejays.
GACC knows how to win, the Bluejays are proven winners.
GACC has won so many close games over the years, and I look for that to be the case once again Thursday night.
I think the game could be close, but I could also see the Bluejays blowing out the Eagles.
GACC should be mighty confident after Tuesday night's win.
It was a heck of a ball game, and stuff you live and play for for sure.
Hats off to the Bluejays for a great and well played game.
It's all in the past though, and GACC has to move on and get ready for O'Neill.
By now, the Bluejays should be over the elation of beating the Bravettes, and ready to tackle the challenge of beating the Eagles.
