Stanton Boys fall at BRLD; Girls win

The Stanton Boys Basketball Team lost 70-33 at BRLD on Saturday.

The Wolverines jumped out to a 25-11 lead on the Mustangs at the end of one before blanking Stanton 12-0 in the 2nd quarter to take a 37-11 lead into the locker room.

The Mustangs won the 3rd quarter 16-13 to make it a 50-27 game at the end of three in favor of BRLD.

The Wolverines outscored Stanton 20-6 in the 4th quarter.

TJ Larson had 14 points while Nathan Arens chipped in 8.

A slow start to the game and a big BRLD 4th quarter proved to be the difference in this one.

The Mustangs (5-12) take on Logan View/Scribner-Snyder (10-6) in the first round of the East Husker Conference Tournament at Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family on Saturday.

The Raiders won 44-33 at home over West Point-Beemer on Saturday.

Not an easy draw for Stanton to say the least.

The Mustangs have had a rough go of it the past couple of games, and have lost three in a row.

Stanton is kind of stumbling into this tournament you could say, something I'm sure they wish wasn't the case.

The Mustangs simply have to play better on both sides of the floor.

The Raiders are a really good defensive team, but their offense is suspect.

Logan View/Scribner-Snyder won by 13 the first time these two teams played, but I expect Stanton to be very competitive in this one.

The Mustangs have a tough draw in this one though.

Win and play more than likely Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family, or lose and either play Wisner-Pilger or Pender.

Anyone can be beaten on any given night though, and Stanton has to play optimistic at the very least.

The Mustangs have to shake off the disappointment of the past 2-3 games and create their own momentum, winning streak, and winning ways in this tournament.

Stanton has a couple of games coming up after this tournament that can very well be wins, and so perhaps the Mustangs can get on a little bit of a roll before the postseason hits.

Stanton was playing better basketball prior to the Madison game, but the Mustangs have been in kind of a funk the past two games.

So Stanton has certainly been up and down this year, but I look for the Mustangs to get back on track at some point before the regular season ends.

Hopefully Stanton can get back to their winning ways in this tournament.

The Mustangs have a tall task in front of them, but can do well and win if they play up to their potential and capability, in my opinion.

Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. on Saturday in Humphrey.

The Stanton Girls picked up a big 51-46 win at BRLD on Saturday.

The game was tied at 11 at the end of one and both teams scored 13 points in the 2nd quarter to make it a 24 all game at halftime.

The Mustangs outscored the Wolverines 14-4 in the 3rd quarter to lead 38-28 at the end of three.

BRLD won the 4th quarter 18-13.

Jessie Brandl had a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds while Bree Burtwhisle posted 14 points. Jaiden Hartl added 10 while Sylvia Cunningham notched 7 rebounds.

Great win for Stanton.

The Mustangs (12-5) take on Wisner-Pilger (5-13) in the first round of the East Husker Conference Tournament at Clarkson/Leigh Friday night.

The Gators lost 48-23 at North Bend Central Thursday night.

Wisner-Pilger has lost four in a row and seven out of their last eight, but owns a 38-21 home win over Stanton on December 20th.

The Mustangs are a much different team now than they were then though I feel.

I look for Stanton to play well and win, and challenge Clarkson/Leigh in the Quarterfinals on Monday should the two teams play.

I think the Mustangs are very capable of making noise in this tournament.

The tournament is up for grabs between the top 7 seeds, in my opinion.

I feel any of the top 7 can beat anyone in this tournament.

Don't count out Twin River, Pender, or Howells-Dodge either though.

Stanton just has to go out there and play their game and play with toughness and aggression.

The Mustangs have to be really upset about what took place and transpired the first time these two teams played, and has to go out there and do something about it.

I'm sure Stanton hasn't forgot about that game one bit, and will go out there and play well and lights out.

The Mustangs' offense has to get them over the hump like it did on Saturday.

Stanton's offense has been pretty good ever since the loss to the Gators, and I look for it to be good again Friday night.

The potential quarterfinal matchup with Clarkson/Leigh would be huge with the two teams being in the same Sub-District and everything.

Beating the Patriots would give the Mustangs a leg up in the competition between the two I feel seeing as they could meet two more times after Monday.

Stanton has to worry about Wisner-Pilger right now though and then can focus on Clarkson/Leigh.

The Mustangs don't get the Patriots without beating the Gators first, so it's first things first for Stanton.

Friday night's game will tip-off at 6:00 p.m. in Clarkson.
