Pender Boys 0-3 in last three contests; Girls 1-2 in same span
The Pender Boys Basketball Team lost 60-43 at home to Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family on Thursday, December 20th in action heard on 107.9 the Bull before falling 102-64 to Laurel-Concord-Coleridge on Saturday in the Great Northeast Nebraska Shootout in Wayne. The Pendragons also lost 82-39 to Hartington Cedar Catholic at the Tournament on Monday.
The Bulldogs went up 19-12 after one before outscoring Pender 21-11 in the 2nd quarter to take a 40-23 lead into the locker room.
Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family won the 3rd quarter 13-7 to increase their lead to 53-30 at the end of three.
The Pendragons won the 4th quarter 13-7.
The Bears led 37-16 after one and outscored Pender 32-21 in the 2nd quarter to take a 69-37 lead into the locker room.
Laurel-Concord-Coleridge won the 3rd quarter 18-17 to go up 87-54 at the end of three.
The Bears won the 4th quarter 15-10.
I'm not sure what happened to Pender in the Holiday Tournament.
The Pendragons (3-6) look to rebound at home against Homer (1-8) Tuesday night in action that can be heard on 107.9 the Bull.
The Knights lost 81-54 to GACC on Saturday at the Howells-Dodge Holiday Tournament.
It has to be back to the drawing board for Pender.
I'm not sure what happened during the Holiday Tournament, if the Pendragons were missing anyone or not, but either way Pender has to play better and perform at a higher level.
The Pendragons have to be a lot better on both ends of the floor.
The good news for Pender is they will have had a lot of practice time in the gym before Tuesday's game.
I look for the Pendragons to come out and play a better game on Tuesday than what they played in either Holiday Tournament game.
Pender desperately needs to beat Homer, and beat them big.
The Pendragons have to get back to playing the type of basketball they played last year.
Pender just hasn't been quite as good this year for whatever reason.
The Pendragons have a lot of tough teams on the schedule throughout the rest of the season, and so Pender has to be better than they have been.
The Pendragons have a lot of time to figure things out and right the ship though so hopefully Pender figures things out sooner rather than later.
A dominate win Tuesday night would be just what the doctor ordered.
It won't be easy and probably seems unlikely after what took place in the Holiday Tournament, but the Pendragons need a big win to get back on track.
Pender has to get fired up and be upset about what happened over the Holidays, and has to do something about it.
No better time than Tuesday to do that too.
I'll be curious to see if the Pendragons can bounce back and turn in a good performance Tuesday night.
The game will be aired on the Bull after the Girls Game, which is set to begin at 6:00 p.m.
The Pender Girls lost 57-43 at home on Thursday, December 20th to Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family in action that can be heard on 107.9 the Bull before falling 62-48 to Hartington Cedar Catholic at the Great Northeast Nebraska Shootout at Wayne State on Saturday, and then beating Arlington 71-68 at the Tournament on Monday.
The Bulldogs led the Pendragons 19-14 after one, and outscored Pender 17-5 in the 2nd quarter to take a 36-19 lead into the locker room.
Pender won the 3rd quarter 11-5 to make it a 41-30 game at the end of three.
The Bulldogs won the 4th quarter 16-13.
Ashley Ostrand had 11 points and 7 rebounds while Sarah Krueger totaled 7 points.
The Trojans led 17-14 after one before winning the 2nd quarter 13-9 to take a 30-23 lead into the locker room.
Cedar Catholic outscored the Pendragons 19-5 in the 3rd quarter to go up 49-28 at the end of three.
Pender won the 4th quarter 20-13.
Reese Kneifl totaled 8 points while Ostrand, Faith Morris, and Krueger notched 7 apiece.
The Eagles went up 15-9 at the end of one before the Pendragons won the 2nd quarter 23-19 to make it a 34-32 game at halftime.
Pender outscored Arlington 22-17 in the 3rd quarter to in front 54-51 at the end of three.
Both teams scored 17 points in the 4th quarter.
Ostrand had 22 points and 8 rebounds while Zoey Lehmkuhl recorded 16 points and 11 rebounds, good enough for a double-double.
Good job by the Pendragons to salvage a win on Monday.
Pender (4-6) hosts Homer (5-4) Tuesday night in a game that can be heard on 107.9 the Bull.
The Knights lost 59-45 to Howells-Dodge at the Howells-Dodge Holiday Tournament 3rd place game on Saturday.
This should be a good, interesting, and compelling ball game.
I feel things can truly go either way.
I think the game will be tight and close throughout.
The Pendragons being at home should help and give them a bit of an advantage I would think.
Pender has to come out and play pressure defense and get after things on that end of the floor.
The Pendragons also have to play the way they did offensively against Arlington.
Ostrand, Morris, Lehmkuhl, Kneifl, and Krueger have to keep scoring the way they have at times, and in Ostrand's case, all the time.
Pender has to tightly contest shots and stay out of foul trouble as much as possible.
Rebounding well will be key as will be playing the passing lanes and forcing turnovers and steals into easy transition baskets.
The Pendragons have to go out there and find a way to win and get the job done.
Pender has to play with a lot of heart and the will to win.
The Pendragons have to refuse to lose and not make losing an option.
Pender has to expect to win and has to make the plays necessary to do so.
The Pendragons have to want it more than the Knights and have to outhustle and outplay Homer.
Pender has to play with the heart of a champion, and also play with a lot of mental and physical toughness, tenacity, determination, pride, grit, and passion.
The Pendragons have to do everything possible to make sure they don't falter in this one.
The second half of the season sets up pretty nicely for Pender so I look for the Pendragons to make some hay.
Tip-off between Pender and Homer is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on the Bull.
