Wisner-Pilger Boys beat West Point-Beemer, lose to Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family; Girls lose to both

The Wisner-Pilger Boys Basketball Team handed West Point-Beemer a 50-45 defeat in Wisner Friday night, giving Head Coach Duane Mendlik his 671st career win, and making him the all-time winningest Head Coach in Nebraska High School Boys Basketball History. The Gators then followed that game up with a 59-44 home loss to Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family Tuesday night.

The Gators led 12-11 over West Point-Beemer after one before the Cadets won the 2nd quarter 12-11 to tie the game at 23 at halftime.

Wisner-Pilger doubled up West Point-Beemer 10-5 in the 3rd quarter to go up 33-28 at the end of three.

Both teams scored 17 points in the 4th quarter.

The Bulldogs led 14-8 after one, and doubled up the Gators 18-9 in the 2nd quarter to take a 32-17 lead into the locker room.

Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family won the 3rd quarter 14-10 to go up 46-27 at the end of three.

Wisner-Pilger won the 4th quarter 17-13.

What a remarkable accomplishment by Coach Mendlik. Truly amazing!!!!

The Gators (8-3) take on Howells-Dodge (8-4) on the road Friday night.

The Jaguars won 63-42 at Plainview on Saturday.

Howells-Dodge is playing real well right now as they've won 5 out of their last 6.

This is a big game for Wisner-Pilger with the Jaguars being a Sub-District opponent and everything.

Both teams have been playing really good basketball lately so this should be a whale of a ball game.

Things don't figure to come easy for the Gators with the way Howells-Dodge has played this year, but this should be a very good game as I mentioned.

Guard play figures to be big in this one as the Jaguars have some solid guards.

Wisner-Pilger has some kids who can really shoot, but are missing a true point guard and ball handler.

The Gators just have to learn to overcome that and figure out a way to break the press and get the ball inside to Jayden Raabe and Caden Schweers and others.

Caden Jackson, Justin Pieper, and others have to be on from the outside as well.

Both teams have good depth with the Jaguars having a little more probably so both teams should be good there.

This game is also big for East Husker Conference Tournament Seeding.

The Gators have an important game against Logan View/Scribner-Snyder on Saturday as well.

Wisner-Pilger got off on the wrong foot Tuesday night with the loss to the Bulldogs so we'll see if the Gators can bounce back on Friday.

This is a pivotal game for Wisner-Pilger as is Saturday's contest against the Raiders.

I really think these games could be the difference between getting the 4, 5, or 6 seeds.

If the Gators win both I think they could get the 4, split they might get the 5, and lose both and it could be the 6 or maybe even the 7.

Wisner-Pilger plays all conference teams prior to the EHC Tournament so we'll definitely find out how the Gators measure up against conference foes.

The Wisner-Pilger Girls lost 60-19 at home to West Point-Beemer Friday night, and fell 71-37 at home to Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family Tuesday night.

West Point-Beemer spurted out to a 20-2 lead on the Gators at the end of one, and outscored Wisner-Pilger 15-4 in the 2nd quarter to take a 35-6 lead into the locker room.

The Cadets won the 3rd quarter 13-8 to go up 48-14 at the end of three.

West Point-Beemer outscored the Gators 12-5 in the 4th quarter.

The Bulldogs got up 23-5 after one before the Gators won the 2nd quarter 17-13 to make it a 36-22 game at halftime in favor of Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family.

The Bulldogs outscored Wisner-Pilger 23-10 in the 3rd quarter to go up 59-32 at the end of three.

Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family outscored the Gators 12-5 in the 4th quarter.

Like they have at times this year, Wisner-Pilger showed signs of promise in the 2nd quarter against the Bulldogs.

The Gators (4-8) take on Howells-Dodge (4-9) on the road Friday night.

The Jaguars won 49-38 at Lutheran High Northeast Tuesday night.

Howells-Dodge is a better team than their record shows given how tough a schedule they've played.

Wisner-Pilger has to try and slow down Erin Prusa.

The battle inside should be really good and intense between Prusa and Jordan Wegner.

Guard play figures to be big also, and the Gators have to be able to handle pressure and get the ball up court.

Offense figures to be big in this one as it always is for Wisner-Pilger.

The Gators also need to play sound defense.

Wisner-Pilger has to play the way they did against Stanton and Wayne.

The Gators lost to the Eagles 39-28 in the opening game of the season.

Those were early season games though and it's January now.

Wisner-Pilger has to shake off the results of last weekend's games and pick things up this weekend.

The Gators have Logan View/Scribner-Snyder at home on Saturday so a chance at a couple of wins this weekend, at least on paper.

Wisner-Pilger has to step things up on both ends of the floor and perform at a high level this weekend.

West Point-Beemer and Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family are two of the top dogs in the Conference, and so I can certainly understand struggling against them.

There's no reason the Gators should struggle this weekend though.

These are two teams that again, at least on paper, Wisner-Pilger should compete with and perhaps even beat.

The next four games after these two appear to be semi-challenging, but I feel there's a lot of potential for wins on the schedule for the Gators leading up to the East Husker Conference Tournament.

We'll see if Wisner-Pilger can make some noise and improve their seeding before that tournament rolls around.
