Howells-Dodge Boys beat Humphrey St. Francis and Plainview; Girls 1-2 in last three games

The Howells-Dodge Boys Basketball Team won 58-47 at home over Humphrey St. Francis Friday night before defeating Plainview 63-42 on the road Saturday in action aired on 107.9 the Bull.

The Flyers got out to a 15-13 lead at the end of one. Both teams scored 12 points in the 2nd quarter, and the score was 27-25 at halftime in favor of St. Francis.

The Flyers won the 3rd quarter 16-11 to extend their lead to 43-36 at the end of three.

The Jaguars outscored Humphrey St. Francis 22-4 in the 4th quarter.

The Jaguars jumped out to a 16-7 lead at the end of one in on the Pirates, and won the 2nd quarter 9-7 to take a 25-14 lead into the locker room.

Howells-Dodge erupted in the 3rd quarter, going on a 21-2 run to start the period and staking claim to a 46-16 lead.

The Jaguars led 52-25 at the end of three, outscoring the Pirates 27-11 in the quarter.

Plainview got as close as 20 in the 4th quarter at 53-33, and outscored Howells-Dodge 17-11 in the quarter.

Luke Rocheford had a team-high 11 points to pace the Jaguars while S&W Welding Player of the game RJ Bayer posted 10, 8 coming in the 1st quarter. CharterWest Bank Sportsmanship Award Winner Lane Hegemann, Josh Brester, Blake Sindelar added 8 apiece while Charlie Dvorak totaled 7.

Head Coach Kevin Janata says the balanced scoring is a credit to his team's depth. "Yeah we knew the matchups for them would be tough. Plainview doesn't go very deep into their bench, they try to stick with the starting five. So we knew if we could run the floor and push the tempo we would have the advantage. So we subbed 8, 9, 10 deep, and I think that gave us a good advantage."

The Jaguars improve to 8-4 on the year and host 8-3 Wisner-Pilger Friday night. Gator Head Coach Duane Mendlik just set the record for the most wins in Nebraska High School Boys Basketball History with 671. "Yeah Duane was coaching at Wisner when I was in high school, and he always has a fundamentally sound team, and they're full of shooters, and they got a good record right now. And it's a Sub-District team. And we'd like to make a statement and get after it. It's going to be a challenge again, but I think it's something that we can accomplish if we put our minds to it," Janata said.

Howells-Dodge is one of those teams you can never count out.

The Jaguars got the Flyers at the end, and I think Howells-Dodge can get Wisner-Pilger too.

This game is big for East Husker Conference Tournament seeding in particular.

I look for Howells-Dodge to play a good, complete game.

The Gators lost by 15 at home to Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family on Tuesday so a golden opportunity for the Jaguars to add to Wisner-Pilger's woes.

Both teams have been playing really good basketball as of late so this should be a good one.

I give the edge to Howells-Dodge since they're at home, but this game could really go either way.

The Jaguars have to play the way they did in the 3rd quarter against the Pirates and the 4th quarter against the Flyers.

If Howells-Dodge can stay close and keep things within striking distance for a while, a big quarter might just be enough to win the game.

That or perhaps the Jaguars will jump on the Gators early and break the game wide open that way.

One way or another Howells-Dodge just has to find a way to win.

The Jaguars have another tough contest with Mead on Saturday, but I think the Jaguars have a good chance to win both games this weekend.

These two games are big and critical for Howells-Dodge, and I look for the Jaguars to step up, perform, and play well.

I really think Howells-Dodge could be in the midst of a big run and winning streak.

We will see if the Jaguars can continue their great play this weekend.

The Howells-Dodge Girls are 2-1 in their last three games, falling 62-31 at home to Humphrey St. Francis Friday night, and then winning 54-33 at Plainview on Saturday, and 49-38 at Lutheran High Northeast Tuesday night.

The Flyers led the Jaguars 12-9 after one, and outscored Howells-Dodge 18-8 in the 2nd quarter to take a 30-17 lead into the locker room.

St. Francis won the 3rd quarter 15-7 to go up 45-24 at the end of three.

The Jaguars outscored the Flyers 17-7 in the 4th quarter to make up the final score.

Erin Prusa had 9 points and 14 rebounds while Cassie Pieper notched 8 points. Jessi Brester totaled 8 rebounds while Brooklyn Macholan posted 7.

The Jaguars got out to a 14-5 lead at the end of the 1st quarter on the Pirates thanks in large part to S&W Welding Player of the Game Prusa, who had 8 of her game-high 23 points in the quarter.

Howells-Dodge outscored Plainview 17-6 in the 2nd quarter to take a 31-16 lead into the locker room.

The Jaguars won the 3rd quarter 17-9, and went up 48-25 at the end of three.

The Pirates won the 4th quarter 8-6.

In addition to Prusa's 23 points and 17 rebounds, Pieper had 13 points for Howells-Dodge while CharterWest Bank Sportsmanship Award Winner Brester chipped in 10.

Head Coach Scott Polacek on the win. "There were times where I felt we could of broke the game open if we finish a couple of opportunities, but we got that nice lead early on, and we just kind of stayed there. We just needed to come get a win. Our schedule's been really tough early so we're just getting whatever we can get."

The Jaguars jumped on the Eagles 16-5 after one. LHNE won the 2nd quarter 12-11 to make it a 27-17 game at halftime in favor of Howells-Dodge.

The Jaguars won the 3rd quarter 13-10 to go up 40-27 at the end of three.

The Eagles won the 4th quarter 11-9.

Prusa notched 14 points and 8 rebounds while Macholan totaled 11 points and 11 rebounds, good enough for a double-double. Brester added 11 points.

Good play from Howells-Dodge on Saturday and Tuesday.

I was really impressed with Prusa on Saturday.

Tuesday appeared to be more balanced scoring for the Jaguars.

Howells-Dodge (4-9) plays host to Wisner-Pilger (4-8) Friday night.

The Gators lost 71-37 at home to Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family Tuesday night, and 60-19 at West Point-Beemer Friday night.

Wisner-Pilger has been struggling lately while the Jaguars are on the upswing.

Howells-Dodge is hitting the part of their schedule where they should win a lot of games.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Jaguars won all of their games leading up to the East Husker Conference Tournament.

I look for Howells-Dodge to go on a winning streak and be a Darkhorse in the conference tournament.

I really think the Jaguars could be a sleeper team heading into the conference tournament...one of those teams no one talks about.

Howells-Dodge has to focus on Friday night first though and then Saturday.

The Jaguars host Mead on Saturday, a game they should definitely win.

I look for Howells-Dodge to pick up two wins this weekend, and continue their winning ways of the last two games.

I look for the Jaguars to do a lot of winning in the second half of the season given their schedule and how well they've come on in the last couple of games.

If Howells-Dodge gets Tonya Brester and Grace Dvorak back at some point they figure to be even that more lethal.

I don't think the Jaguars are a team people are going to want to play down the stretch.

I think Howells-Dodge can make some noise down the line, and look for them to do so.

The story has not yet been written on the 2018-2019 Jaguars....there's still a lot of season left and a long ways yet to go.

With that said, Howells-Dodge can't slip up and has to keep winning.

I look for the Jaguars to do some damage before season's end, and keep on rolling right along into the Conference Tournament.
