Stanton Girls 1-1 in East Husker Conference Tournament so far

The Stanton Girls won their first game of the East Husker Conference Tournament at Howells-Dodge Friday night, winning 46-44 in overtime over Twin River. The Mustangs turned around and lost 58-42 to the Jaguars Monday night.

Stanton and Twin River were tied at 11 after one. The Titans won the second quarter 10-8 to go up 21-19 at halftime.

The Mustangs outscored the Titans 11-8 in the third quarter to take a 30-29 lead at the end of three.

Twin River scored 11 fourth quarter points while holding Stanton to 10 to force overtime.

The Mustangs outlasted the Titans 6-4 in the extra session.

Hiliary Huss had a team-high 20 points while Jessie Brandl registered 8. MacKenzie Brandl added 7.

The Jaguars and Mustangs were tied at 13 after one. Stanton won the second quarter 13-12 to lead 26-25 at halftime.

Howells-Dodge outscored the Mustangs 18-5 in the third quarter to go up 43-31 at the end of three.

The Jaguars notched 15 fourth quarter points compared to 11 for Stanton.

The Mustangs were right in it with Howells-Dodge. It was just the third quarter that doomed Stanton.

The Mustangs (14-7) battle Pender (12-10) in a conference tournament consolation game Thursday night in North Bend.

The Pendragons lost 34-26 to Oakland-Craig in the quarterfinals in West Point Monday night.

Stanton beat Pender 49-46 on the road on December 19th.

I look for this game to be good, just like the first matchup between the two teams was.

I think the Mustangs are more than capable of beating the Pendragons a second time, but Stanton has to want to be there.

Both teams are no doubt disappointed they're not in the semifinals, but this is the next best thing.

The Mustangs have to treat this like a winner's bracket or championship type game.

Stanton can't view this game as a dud. The Mustangs have to care, and show up ready to play a good game.

Huss needs to have a big game as do both Brandl's.

Stanton has to watch out for Amber English, Hallie Ballinger, Justice Sorenson, Kam Anderson, and Cecilee Jacobsen.

Thursday night's game is scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m. North Bend Central and Tekamah-Herman follow.
