Guardian Angels Central Catholic Boys finish 4th in Mid-State Conference Tournament; Girls 2-0 in last two games

The Guardian Angels Central Catholic Boys fell 46-37 to Pierce in the Mid-State Conference Tournament in Norfolk Friday night before losing 62-47 to Boone Central/Newman Grove on Saturday in the 3rd place game of the tournament.

Pierce led GACC 9-1 after one. GACC won the second quarter 14-13 to make it a 22-15 game at the half.

Pierce outscored GACC 9-4 in the third quarter to go up 31-19 after three.

GACC notched 18 fourth quarter points compared to 15 for Pierce.

The Cardinals led the Bluejays 21-10 at the end of one. GACC won the second quarter 16-14 to make it a 35-26 game at halftime.

Boone Central/Newman Grove outscored the Bluejays 14-12 in the third quarter to lead 49-38 at the end of three.

The Cardinals put up 13 fourth quarter points compared to 9 for GACC.

Kobe Slaughter had a team-high 13 points. Tanner Ortmeier notched 8 while Brandon Hass and Nolan Plagge totaled 7 apiece.

The Bluejays really struggled against Boone Central/Newman Grove. GACC was probably disappointed about not being in the championship, and combine that with the fact it took a lot out of the Bluejays to beat the Cardinals the first time they played, and it was just too overwhelming for GACC.

GACC (14-6) squares off with Pierce (17-3) again Thursday night in Pierce.

Pierce beat O'Neill 53-43 in the tournament championship game Saturday night.

Pierce is definitely playing well right now, like they have pretty much all season. GACC has their work cut out for them without a doubt.

It's always tough to beat a team twice in a season though so I look for GACC to go into Pierce and play well.

I feel this game could go either way even though GACC hasn't played as well as Pierce has lately.

I think GACC will come in motivated and hungry for a win. Pierce will too I'm sure, which means this game should be very competitive.

I think Pierce has the slight advantage being at home, but it wouldn't be unlike GACC to win in a tough road environment.

I look for Slaughter, Ortmeier, Plagge, and Hass to have good games. GACC also needs Tanner Hass, Kobe Benne, Andrew Guenther, and Noah Kreikemeier to step up.

In other words, GACC needs everyone to play well and be on the same page to have a chance. I'm interested to see what GACC can do here at the end of the regular season.

The GACC Girls won 57-44 over Crofton in the Mid-State Conference Tournament Championship game Saturday night before downing Norfolk Catholic 45-32 at home Tuesday night.

The Warriors led the Bluejays 11-5 at the end of one. GACC outscored Crofton 19-4 in the second quarter to take a 24-15 lead into the locker room.

The Bluejays won the third quarter 17-16 to lead 41-31 at the end of three.

GACC notched 16 points in the fourth quarter compared to 13 for the Warriors.

Katie Steuter had a team-high 17 points while Breanne Kreikemeier and Lexis Haase notched 12 and 11, respectively. Kate Knobbe added 7.

The Bluejays led the Knights 9-8 after one. GACC outscored Norfolk Catholic 15-12 in the second quarter to lead 24-20 at halftime.

The Bluejays won the third quarter 9-8 to go up 33-28 at the end of three.

GACC tripled up the Knights 12-4 in the fourth quarter.

Steuter led the way with 15 points while Kreikemeier totaled 7. Knobbe added 7 rebounds.

The Bluejays didn't play as well as they had been against Norfolk Catholic, but GACC had minimal rest, and perhaps let down a little after the big win over Crofton.

GACC (21-1) is on the road Thursday night, taking on Pierce (20-2).

Pierce defeated Wayne 49-40 in the tournament third place game on Saturday.

Pierce is certainly a good team, but lost to Crofton twice while GACC has beaten the Warriors on two occasions.

That might not mean anything, but to me it means GACC has a definite advantage.

As long as GACC plays at a high level and better than they did Tuesday night, they should win.

It's certainly going to be tough to win at Pierce, and they will certainly be fired and amped up to take on a team like GACC, but I think GACC will handle things just fine.

GACC knows how to win tough games on the road, and has come through time and time again this season.

I don't think GACC is at full strength yet, and that could certainly affect things a little bit, but GACC has continued to play well even without the services of a couple of players.

I totally expect GACC to handle their business and play well. It's the last game of the regular season so GACC wants to be sharp heading into sub districts next week.

It will be interesting to see what happens. Again, I think GACC will be just fine, but you never know, especially given how Tuesday night's game went.
