North Bend Central Boys win East Husker Conference Tournament; Girls down Tekamah-Herman twice

The North Bend Central Boys beat Twin River 53-50 in the East Husker Conference Tournament Championship game at Central Community College in Columbus on Saturday after downing Lyons-Decatur Northeast 58-29 at home in the semifinals Friday night.

The Tigers jumped out to a 14-3 lead on the Cougars at the end of one. North Bend Central outscored Lyons-Decatur Northeast 19-9 in the second quarter to take a 33-12 lead into the locker room.

The Tigers won the third quarter 13-6 to lead 46-18 at the end of three.

North Bend Central put up 12 fourth quarter points compared to 11 for the Cougars.

Jake Wieftfeld led all scorers with 18 points. Nathan Boyce totaled 10 while Matt Ortmeier and Jake Cleveringa recorded 8 apiece.

The Tigers led the Titans 9-8 after one. North Bend Central outscored Twin River 16-11 in the second quarter to take a 25-19 lead into the locker room.

The Titans won the third quarter 14-11 to make it a 36-33 game at the end of three.

Both teams scored 17 points in the fourth quarter.

Wieftfeld and Ortmeier each had 13 points to lead the team while Tanner Wietfeld and Boyce notched 9 and 8, respectively.

The Tigers have continued to dominate. I was impressed with North Bend Central's ability to avenge their only loss of the season.

The Tigers (19-1) are at Howells-Dodge (8-13) Thursday night.

The Jaguars lost 54-46 at Bancroft-Rosalie Tuesday night.

Howells-Dodge has certainly struggled lately, and that's good news for North Bend Central.

The Tigers have kept things rolling all season, and I look for North Bend Central to roll to another victory Thursday night.

The Jaguars are certainly capable of pulling the upset, but the Tigers just have a knack for winning close games.

It hasn't mattered how much or how long North Bend Central has trailed in games, they've bounced back time and time again.

Winning has become contagious in North Bend, and the Tigers are experiencing a great amount of success.

North Bend Central is on the verge of making the state tournament, and needs to keep winning to ensure themselves a spot at state via wildcard should they falter in the postseason.

At the same time, the Tigers need to play well to prepare themselves for a team like Columbus Scotus.

North Bend Central just needs to keep doing what they've been doing all season long, and they will be just fine.

It has been a dream season for the Tigers, and I look for North Bend Central to keep things going Thursday night.

The North Bend Central Girls beat Tekamah-Herman twice in a row at home, winning 51-40 Thursday night in an East Husker Conference Tournament Consolation game before downing them 34-31 Tuesday night.

I must say I was surprised North Bend Central won both matchups, but that is why they play the games.

North Bend Central (16-4) takes on Howells-Dodge (17-5) on the road Thursday night.

The Jaguars won 59-38 at Bancroft-Rosalie Tuesday night.

This is going to be a very difficult game for the Tigers, in my opinion. Tekamah-Herman upset Howells-Dodge though so North Bend Central can certainly win.

I'm sure both teams will get after each other with it being a big game to end the regular season.

I'm sure both teams really want this one badly, and I expect their play to reflect that.

It's nearly postseason time, and I look for both teams to treat this game like a sub district, district final, or state game.

I suspect both teams will dive after loose balls, execute well, play physical, look to control tempo, and do the little things well.

There's really not a lot of room for error if you are either team. Both teams are really good, and a turnover here or a turnover there could be the difference in the game.

Every possession matters, and the Tigers need to value each possession.

North Bend Central has to pretend that each possession is their last of the game when they have a chance to win it.

The Tigers also have to believe they can score on every possession.
