Lyons-Decatur Northeast Girls win final two games of regular season

After losing in the East Husker Conference Tourney to Wisner Pilger by 12 points, Lyons Decatur Northeast's girls beat them at home Tuesday night 50 to 48. Lyons Decatur Northeast clobbered Logan View/Scribner-Snyder on the road Friday night 48 to 29.

Lyons-Decatur Northeast led  the Gators 13-9 after one. Wisner-Pilger outscored the Cougars 16-11 in the second quarter to lead 25-24 at halftime.

The Gators won the third quarter 16-15 to go up 41-39 at the end of three.

Lyons-Decatur Northeast put up 11 fourth quarter points and held Wisner-Pilger to 9.

Lexie Bacon registered 17 points while Brianne Haskell scored 12. Kelly Wakeley and Abby Peterson notched 8 apiece.

Head Coach Rex Haskell says it was good to win their final home game ever. "This is the last home game ever for Lyons-Decatur Northeast, and the girls were asked to make it a memorable one before we played, and I think they did that."

Haskell says it came down to a team effort. "I can't single anyone out as being superior. It was a team effort, and that's what we need from us. We need to hit open shots, we need to move the ball good, and rebound. And we worked really hard on rebounding because when we played them guys up in Wisner they took it to us on the boards pretty hard. And our girls did a good job."

The Cougars led the Raiders 7-3 after one. Lyons-Decatur Northeast won the second quarter 14-11 to take a 21-14 lead into the locker room.

The Cougars outscored Logan View/Scribner-Snyder 15-3 in the third quarter to lead 36-17 at the end of three.

Both teams scored 12 fourth quarter points.

Mariah Jessen had a team-high 12 points and 16 rebounds, good enough for a double-double. Wakeley, Bacon, and Peterson notched 9 points apiece while Haskell added 7. Peterson totaled 9 rebounds.

Head Coach Rex Haskell says despite the win, his girls had trouble scoring. "We had good shots, but they just wouldn't fall. The girls played hard though, and that's what kept us in the game. But shooting percentage wasn't very good, our free throw percentage wasn't very good. It was just one of them games, and you have them every once in a while. But the good thing was the girls played hard the entire game."

Lyons-Decatur Northeast (13-7) battles Bancroft-Rosalie (7-13) in the D2-3 Sub District at Clarkson Tuesday night.

The two teams met in the first game of the season with the Cougars winning 48-44.

I think Lyons-Decatur Northeast has a good chance to win again, but the Cougars could definitely be feeling the pressure.

Lyons-Decatur Northeast is the #1 seed and will no doubt get the Panthers' best shot.

This is the final time one of these teams will ever take the floor as the team they are now as next year these two teams are co-oping.

There's probably some extra incentive to want to win and continue the season if you are both of these teams.

I expect Tuesday evening's game to be an all out battle with both teams leaving everything out on the floor.

This type of game is where guts and glory come into play.

No pain, no gain, so these girls have to exert every ounce of energy possible and resist the pain their bodies are giving them to pick up the win.

The Cougars have to sacrifice for another, dive after loose balls, and fight for possession when need be.

I expect both of these teams to get after things for four quarters, and give it their all for 32 minutes.

Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m.
