Winnebago Girls rout Wakefield
The Winnebago Girls rounded out the regular season Tuesday night with an 81-23 win at Wakefield.
The Indians spurted out to a 22-4 lead on the Trojans at the end of one. Winnebago doubled up Wakefield 26-13 in the second quarter to lead 48-17 at halftime.
The Indians outscored the Trojans 20-2 in the third quarter to go up 68-19 after three.
Winnebago won the fourth quarter 13-4.
Illeana Frenchman led all scorers with 31 points. Kae Earth notched 15 while Delicia Payer totaled 13. Evah Appleton scored 8 while Isabel Earth registered 7.
This was a dominant performance from the Indians. It was exactly the type of win Winnebago needed heading into sub districts.
The Indians (7-16) square off with Wakefield (2-19) again in sub districts Monday night.
The two teams are participating in the C2-3 sub district at Pender. Other teams in the sub district include Guardian Angels Central Catholic, Oakland-Craig, and Wisner-Pilger.
The winner of this game will have the chance to upset the powerhouse Bluejays.
If Winnebago plays the way they did against the Trojans the first time around, I don't see any way they lose.
The Indians really took their game to the next level against Wakefield Tuesday night, and need to have the same kind of performance again Monday night.
Winnebago needs to play well and win big Monday night to have a chance to upset GACC.
The Indians have to keep playing optimistic basketball and see what happens.
I don't know if Winnebago can beat the Bluejays, but if GACC plays the way they did against Norfolk Catholic, and in the the first three quarters against Pierce, the Indians might have a chance.
A lot of it depends on how well both teams play.
Winnebago has to first and foremost be focused on Wakefield though. Even though the Indians just beat the Trojans soundly, they can't afford to take them lightly. That's the last thing Winnebago wants to have happen.
Monday night's game is scheduled to tip-off at 7:00 p.m. in Pender. The winner gets the Bluejays at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
