Winnebago Boys edge Gothenburg
The Winnebago Boys nearly blew a big lead to Gothenburg on Saturday at the Heartland Hoops Classic in Grand Island, but escaped with an 80-78 win thanks to an Aspen Lapointe three-pointer at the buzzer.
The Indians led 61-39 in the second half only to see the Swedes go on a 26-4 run and tie the game at 65.
Winnebago started the game on an 11-0 run and led 33-19 after one. The Indians won the second quarter 16-12 to go up 49-31 at halftime.
The Swedes outscored Winnebago 27-16 in the third quarter to make it a 65-58 game at the end of three.
Gothenburg scored 20 fourth quarter points compared to 15 for the Indians.
Winnebago had a scare on Saturday, but the Indians came through in the clutch, and that's all that matters.
Winnebago (25-0) takes on Guardian Angels Central Catholic (15-7) on the road Friday night
The Bluejays won 62-55 over Wayne at home on Saturday.
GACC is a tough, respectable team who has knocked off some good teams this season.
You can bet the Bluejays will come ready to play. That means the Indians have to be on top of their game at all times.
Winnebago did a great job building a big lead against the Swedes, but I felt like the Indians let the foot off the accelerator some.
Winnebago has to keep the foot on the throttle for four quarters and play like it's their last game of the season.
If the Indians want to win the Class C-2 State Championship, they have to put good teams away when they have the chance.
Winnebago is a great team, but these close calls could eventually catch up to them.
The Indians lived on the edge on Saturday, and that can't continue to happen if Winnebago wants to win state.
Hastings St. Cecilia is a very good team, and in watching them Saturday, they are a very capable team.
The Indians shouldn't worry about the Bluehawks yet, and may not even play them at state, but Winnebago needs to get back to their dominate ways Friday night.
The Indians and Bluejays could very well meet in sub districts next week.
