Lyons-Decatur Northeast Boys take 4th in East Husker Conference Tournament; Girls lose consolation game to Wisner-Pilger
The Lyons-Decatur Northeast Boys finished 4th in the East Husker Conference Tournament, losing 58-29 at North Bend Central in the semifinals Friday night before falling 58-47 to Stanton in the third place game on Saturday at Central Community College in Columbus.
The Tigers jumped out to a 14-3 lead on the Cougars at the end of one. North Bend Central outscored Lyons-Decatur Northeast 19-9 in the second quarter to take a 33-12 lead into the locker room.
The Tigers won the third quarter 13-6 to lead 46-18 at the end of three.
North Bend Central put up 12 fourth quarter points compared to 11 for the Cougars.
Cole Christoffersen led the way with 12 points and 11 rebounds, good enough for a double-double.
Lyons-Decatur Northeast led the Mustangs 13-6 after one. The Cougars won the second quarter 15-12 to take a 28-18 lead into the locker room.
Stanton outscored Lyons-Decatur Northeast 17-10 in the third quarter to make it a 38-35 game at the end of three.
The Mustangs notched 23 fourth quarter points compared to 9 for the Cougars.
Alec Anderson led the way with 17 points and 11 rebounds, good enough for a double-double. Marcus Hegy registered 16 points while Christoffersen added 7.
Lyons-Decatur Northeast gave it their best shot in both games, but came out on the short end of the stick on both occasions.
The Cougars (13-6) host Wisner-Pilger (7-11) Tuesday night.
The Gators lost 46-44 in overtime to West Point-Beemer in a tournament consolation game Friday night.
Wisner-Pilger has really struggled lately as they have lost four in a row and six out of their last seven.
Neither team is playing their best basketball right now, and that should make for an interesting game.
Lyons-Decatur Northeast needs to play with a sense of urgency, and must have a winning mentality.
It's not time to panic if you are the Cougars by any means, but Lyons-Decatur Northeast has to get tougher mentally and physically to close out people.
The Cougars have to continually be aggressive, driving to the basket and contesting shots.
Lyons-Decatur Northeast needs to be good about coming through in the clutch, and making plays in crunch time.
I felt like the Cougars let one get away against Stanton, and have something to prove yet.
This is a big game for Lyons-Decatur Northeast in terms of power points. The Cougars need to win this one to earn extra points and to prove to themselves they can play with teams in higher classes than them.
Lyons-Decatur Northeast has their work cut out for them this week with Tuesday night's game and a Friday night matchup against Logan View/Scribner-Snyder, but knowing how tough the Cougars are, I'm sure they will come ready to play and put up a good fight both nights.
Listen to Tuesday night's game on 107.9 the Bull. It's scheduled to start after the girls game, which is set for a 6:00 p.m. start.
The Lyons-Decatur Northeast Girls lost 61-49 to Wisner-Pilger Thursday night in an East Husker Conference Tournament Consolation game.
The Gators doubled up the Cougars 18-9 in the first quarter. Wisner-Pilger outscored Lyons-Decatur Northeast 16-10 in the second quarter to lead 34-19 at halftime.
Both teams scored 13 second quarter points, and the score after three was 47-32 in favor of the Gators.
The Cougars won the fourth quarter 17-14.
Brianne Haskell had a team-high 15 points. Brandi Simonsen notched 7 points while Abby Peterson ripped down 13 rebounds.
Lyons-Decatur Northeast just got off to too slow a start to comeback against Wisner-Pilger. The Cougars aren't exactly built to come from behind when facing large deficits.
Lyons-Decatur Northeast (11-7) takes on the Gators (11-8) again in Lyons Tuesday night.
I look for this time around to be a much different game. I think you will see the Cougars play much better than they did the first time around against Wisner-Pilger.
I'm sure Lyons-Decatur Northeast will have a lot of motivation given what happened Thursday night.
This team doesn't need a lot of motivating, but the Cougars are at their best when teams underestimate or overlook them.
I'm not suggesting the Gators will take Lyons-Decatur Northeast lightly, but I think there's a chance Wisner-Pilger won't be as sharp as they were Thursday night.
I think Tuesday night's game will be a lot closer than the first matchup was. I don't think the game will be as one sided as the first half of Thursday night's game was.
The key for the Cougars is start off fast and finish strong. Lyons-Decatur Northeast finished strong Thursday night, but got off to a slow start, and that cannot happen again.
The Cougars have to be very hungry and determined to play a complete game and have a better showing than they did Thursday night.
I don't think there's any doubt Lyons-Decatur Northeast is capable of winning Tuesday night, but the Cougars definitely have their work cut out for them.
The Gators have won three out of their last four.
