Stanton Boys take 3rd in East Husker Conference Tournament; Girls win consolation game

The Stanton Boys finished 3rd in the East Husker Conference Tournament, losing 67-57 to Twin River in the semifinals in North Bend Friday night before downing Stanton 58-47 in the third place game on Saturday at Central Community College in Columbus.

The Mustangs led the Titans 18-16 at the end of one. Twin River outscored Stanton 20-11 in the second quarter to take a 36-29 lead into the locker room.

The Titans won the third quarter 15-9 to lead 51-38 at the end of three.

The Mustangs notched 19 fourth quarter points compared to 16 for Twin River.

Brook Klinetobe led the way with 17 points. Kyle Sperl totaled 11 while Josh Krentz had 8 points and 7 rebounds. Myles Nickolite recorded 8 points.

Lyons-Decatur Northeast led the Mustangs 13-6 after one. The Cougars won the second quarter 15-12 to take a 28-18 lead into the locker room.

Stanton outscored Lyons-Decatur Northeast 17-10 in the third quarter to make it a 38-35 game at the end of three.

The Mustangs notched 23 fourth quarter points compared to 9 for the Cougars.

Nickolite had a team-high 16 points. Klinetobe notched 15 while Sperl registered 10 points and 12 rebounds, good enough for a double-double. Krentz added 7 points.

Stanton had a tough game against Twin River, but bounced back nicely against Lyons-Decatur Northeast. Third place in the conference is nothing to be disappointed about.

The Mustangs (17-6) take on Clarkson/Leigh (4-17) on the road Thursday night.

The Patriots lost 72-58 at Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family Friday night in a conference tournament consolation game.

Stanton needs to be ready to take Clarkson/Leigh's best shot. It's the last game of the regular season, and you can bet the Patriots are going to bring the kitchen sink.

It's the last time Clarkson/Leigh's seniors will ever play on their home floor.

The biggest thing for the Mustangs, in my opinion, is to remain calm and weather any storms the Patriots throw their way.

The fourth quarter has treated Clarkson/Leigh unkind for the most part this season so Stanton can probably afford to be tied or trailing heading into the fourth period.

The Mustangs can't afford to get down double digits though, that could spell doom for Stanton.

The Mustangs have to play at a high level offensively and defensively, and do the little things like make free throws and layups, take care of the ball, pressure the ball defensively, contest shots, and box out.

Klinetobe, Sperl, Nickolite, Krentz, and even Mitchael Sieh need to have big games for Stanton.

The Mustangs have had a fine season, and a win over the Patriots would be a good way to cap off the regular season.

Stanton could definitely use some momentum heading into sub districts, and a win could definitely keep the momentum going. A loss could halt the momentum the Mustangs have from the conference tournament.

The Stanton Girls won 47-36 over Pender in an East Husker Conference Tournament Consolation game at North Bend Central Thursday night.

The Mustangs jumped out to a 13-4 lead at the end of one. Stanton outscored Pender 18-5 in the second quarter to take a 31-9 lead into the locker room.

The Pendragons won the third quarter 12-5 to make it a 36-21 game in favor of the Mustangs at the end of three.

Pender put up 15 fourth quarter points compared to 11 for Stanton.

Hiliary Huss led all scorers with 19 points. Jessie Brandl added 9 while Bree Burtwhistle registered 8 rebounds.

The Mustangs played a really good first half, and did what they needed to do to pick up a win.

Stanton (15-7) takes on Clarkson/Leigh (4-16) on the road Thursday night.

The Patriots beat Logan View/Scribner-Snyder 48-44 in a tournament consolation game Thursday night.

It was Clarkson/Leigh's first win of 2016 and could perhaps inspire the Patriots to play well Thursday night.

The Mustangs have to be ready for Clarkson/Leigh's best shot. It's the last game of the regular season, and you can bet the Patriots will do all they can to pull off the upset, especially with it being their last game at home.

Stanton needs to win this game for momentum purposes heading into sub districts though. This is the Mustangs' last chance to play well and fine tune some things before the postseason.

Ideally, Stanton would like to win big. That would be a good way for the Mustangs to end the regular season.

Stanton really does need to dominate to give themselves a big boost of confidence heading into sub districts next week.

This may not seem like a very big game for the Mustangs, but it's important, in my opinion. It's Stanton's last chance to show what they can do before the postseason.

We will see what the Mustangs are made of and how tough they are. It's important for Stanton to be focused as well as mentally and physically tough.

The Mustangs have to execute at a high level, and limit mistakes as much as possible.

It's that time of year when you want to be playing your best basketball, and that certainly applies to Stanton just like any other team.
