West Point-Beemer Boys beat Wisner-Pilger, lose to Madison; Girls finish 4th in East Husker Conference Tournament and down Madison
The West Point-Beemer Boys knocked off Wisner-Pilger 46-44 Friday night in an East Husker Conference Tournament game in Wisner before losing 57-46 at Madison Tuesday night.
The Cadets led the Gators 10-7 after one. Wisner-Pilger won the second quarter 13-10 to make it a 20-20 game at halftime.
West Point-Beemer outscored the Gators 10-7 in the third quarter to lead 30-27 at the end of three.
Wisner-Pilger put up 15 fourth quarter points compared to 12 for the Cadets, including a Tate Toelle three-pointer at the buzzer to send the game into overtime.
West Point-Beemer doubled up the Gators 4-2 in the extra session thanks to an Adam Niewohner buzzer beating two-pointer.
Toelle led the way with 18 points while Blake Schroedter notched 12. Ben Jahnke added 7 rebounds.
The Dragons led the Cadets 17-14 after one. Madison won the third quarter 14-13 to go up 31-27 at halftime.
The Dragons outscored West Point-Beemer 9-7 in the third quarter to lead 40-34 at the end of three.
Madison put up 17 fourth quarter points compared to 12 for the Cadets.
Austin Streeter finished with a team-high 14 points and 10 rebounds, good enough for a double-double. Toelle added 8 points while Schroedter notched 7. Chase Streeter registered 10 rebounds.
West Point-Beemer did well to beat Wisner-Pilger, but didn't play as well against the Dragons.
The Cadets (8-14) round out the regular season Friday night at Oakland-Craig (8-12).
Oakland-Craig defeated Madison 60-48 Friday night in an East Husker Conference Tournament Consolation game.
The Knights are a pretty good team, and have played consistent, decent basketball all season long.
Oakland-Craig has some big wins this season. The Knights have beaten some good teams.
If the Madison games are any indication, Oakland-Craig should win, especially since they are at home.
Both teams have been so up and down this season though that's really hard to know what you are going to get from both teams.
It really depends which teams show up as to who is going to win this game.
It's the last game of the regular season for the Cadets, and so I think there will be some extra motivation for West Point-Beemer.
The Cadets know they can rest all of next week before sub district play begins.
That means West Point-Beemer should have plenty of energy and enthusiasm Friday night.
I look for this game to be an all out battle between two teams who really want it. It should be an electric atmosphere for this Northeast Nebraska game.
I wouldn't be surprised if this game was close and came down to the wire, or if the Knights won big.
In the East Husker Conference girls semifinals in West Point last Thursday night, Oakland Craig beat number one seed West Point Beemer 50 to 48. The Cadets turned around and lost 41-36 to Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family in the third place game in Columbus on Saturday. West Point-Beemer defeated Madison 60-15 on the road Tuesday night.
The Cadets led the Knights 21-13 after one. Both teams scored 13 second quarter points, and the halftime score was 34-26 in favor of West Point-Beemer.
Head Coach Craig Theis's girls led at the half, but were outscored 17 to 8 in the third.
"It's just one of those things where you kind of look up there and time runs out and you're like shoot we got beat by a team. And they were the better team so give them all the credit in the world. Joe had them very well prepared."
Theis says the third quarter was devastating
"We felt good going into halftime with a nice little 7-8 point lead. And I don't know what Joe said to his kids and I didn't say to my kids, but that third quarter 17-8 just man it was devastating. Just blow after blow it seemed like. They just kept coming at us. And in transition they really hurt us."
Oakland-Craig won the fourth quarter 7-6.
Amanda Hansen had a game-high 23 points while McKenzie Bruce totaled 8. Bethany Anderson added 9 rebounds.
The Bulldogs led the Cadets 13-10 after one. West Point-Beemer outscored Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family 15-10 in the second quarter to go up 25-23 at halftime.
The Bulldogs won the third quarter 7-3 to lead 30-28 at the end of three.
Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family notched 11 fourth quarter points and held the Cadets to 8.
Hansen led all scorers with 27 points and had 10 rebounds to earn a double-double.
West Point-Beemer jumped on the Dragons 26-4 at the end of the first quarter. The Cadets outscored Madison 21-3 in the second quarter to take a 47-7 lead into the locker room.
West Point-Beemer won the third quarter 5-3 to go up 52-10 after three.
The Cadets scored 8 points in the fourth quarter and held the Dragons to 5.
Hansen had a game-high 21 points while Bruce registered 16. Taylor Weddle added 8 while Anderson recorded 7 points and 7 rebounds.
I think West Point-Beemer was stunned to lose to Oakland-Craig. I would say that along with the fact the Cadets didn't have Bruce against Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family is why they didn't beat the Bulldogs.
West Point-Beemer (19-4) gets a shot at redemption Friday night when the Cadets take on Oakland-Craig (18-4) on the road.
Oakland-Craig won 43-25 at Archbishop Bergan Tuesday night.
This game figures to be another slugfest between two very good teams.
This should be a great regular season game, and will be a big win for one of these teams to close out the regular season.
It's Brynn and Bailey Charling, Dacey Nelson, Olivia Bures, and Emma Reinert going up against the likes of Hansen, Bruce, Weddle, and Anderson.
I think West Point-Beemer will win this time around, but the game can really go either way.
Whoever wins this game will have a boat load of momentum heading into sub districts. The loser will still be in good shape, but the winner will most likely go a long ways in securing a wildcard into the state tournament.
Both teams have a tough road to the state tournament, and this game will no doubt help prepare both teams for what lies ahead.
The atmosphere and intensity level of this game should be at a postseason level.
I think the Cadets caught a team in Oakland-Craig that was ready to play a four quarter game the first time around.
I'm not so sure West Point-Beemer was totally ready for the Knights the first time around, but I'm sure they will be this time.
