Wisner-Pilger Boys lose close games to North Bend Central and Howells-Dodge

The Wisner-Pilger Boys lost 56-52 in overtime at home to North Bend Central last Thursday night before falling 56-52 to Howells-Dodge in the first round of the East Husker Conference Tournament Saturday at Twin River.

The Tigers led the Gators 13-8 after one. Wisner-Pilger outscored North Bend Central 17-12 in the second quarter to tie the game at 25 at halftime.

The Gators doubled up the Tigers 20-10 in the third quarter to lead 45-35 at the end of three.

North Bend Central tripled up Wisner-Pilger 15-5 in the fourth quarter to force overtime.

The Tigers outlasted the Gators 6-2 in the extra session.

Head Coach Duane Mendlik says the Gators continue to struggle from the line.

"We played pretty well. Losing this game is our free throw. We for some reason can't shoot free throws. And we probably got four or five games now that if we'd of shot decent free throws, not great, just decent, we probably would of won the game."

The Jaguars held a one-point lead on Wisner-Pilger at the end of one at 14-13. The Gators outscored Howells-Dodge 20-15 in the second quarter to take a 33-29 lead into the locker room.

The Jaguars doubled up Wisner-Pilger 10-5 in the third quarter to go up 39-38 at the end of three.

Howells-Dodge won the fourth quarter 17-14.

The Gators have struggled some lately. Free throws and a lack of execution down the stretch could be why Wisner-Pilger has been off their game as of late.

The Gators (7-10) take on West Point-Beemer (7-13) in a consolation game of the East Husker Conference Tournament Friday night in Wisner.

The Cadets downed Wisner-Pilger 40-27 on January 18th in West Point.

That was when West Point-Beemer was playing good basketball.

Both teams are struggling right now so it's hard saying how this matchup is going to go.

I believe the Cadets will be without Chase Streeter, and that's a significant loss for West Point-Beemer if he's unable to go.

The Gators have to right the ship and find a way to play better.

Wisner-Pilger has come close to winning the last three times out, they just haven't sealed the deal.

The Gators could be a whole lot better than they are if they would just make free throws. The little and simple things are costing Wisner-Pilger.

Perhaps the Gators can breakthrough and win Friday night, but it's not going to be easy.

West Point-Beemer will no doubt be hungry for a win, and probably has confidence and believes they can get the job done.

The Cadets are probably thinking "We beat them once, we can do it again."

It will be interesting to see how mentally tough Wisner-Pilger is. The Gators have to have a hard nosed, tough mindset when playing the game.

Wisner-Pilger has to remain cool and calm when shooting free throws, and simply watch the ball go through the net.

Friday night's game is set to tip-off at 6:00 p.m. in Wisner.
