The Lyons-Decatur Northeast Girls defeated Oakland-Craig 57-55 at home Thursday night before losing 65-56 at Tekamah-Herman Friday night in the East Husker Conference Tournament.
The
Cougars jumped on Oakland-Craig 13-6 after one. The Knights outscored
Lyons-Decatur Northeast 19-14 in the second quarter to make it a 27-25 game at
the half.
Oakland-Craig won the
third quarter 17-12 to take a 42-39 lead at the end of three.
The Cougars notched 18
fourth quarter points compared to 13 for the Knights.
Lexie Bacon had a team-high 13 points and 8 rebounds. Abby Peterson added 12 points while Brianne Haskell and Mariah Jessen notched 11 points and 9 rebounds apiece. Kelly Wakeley totaled 7 points.
Lyons-Decatur Northeast led the Tigers 14-13 after one. Tekamah-Herman won the second quarter 19-18 to tie the game at 32 at halftime.
The Tigers outscored the Cougars 17-6 in the third quarter to go up 49-38 after three.
Lyons-Decatur Northeast scored 18 points in the fourth quarter compared to 16 for Tekamah-Herman.
Haskell led all scorers with 28 points while Bacon totaled 11. Wakeley registered 8. Peterson added 12 rebounds.
The Cougars played at a really high level in both games. It was just the third quarter that prevented Lyons-Decatur Northeast from beating the Tigers.
The Cougars (11-6) square off with Wisner-Pilger (10-8) in a consolation game of the conference tournament Thursday night in Wisner.
The Gators lost 47-34 to Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family in the conference tournament Friday night.
Wisner-Pilger has played well a lot of the time this year, just like Lyons-Decatur Northeast.
This is a quality consolation game without a doubt. I expect both teams to get after one another and treat this like a semifinal game.
Every game, every team in this conference presents a different challenge every time.
That doesn't change when these two teams meet Thursday night.
Both teams do a number of things really well.
The Cougars must play with intensity, desire, and passion Thursday night. Lyons-Decatur Northeast has to play with guts for glory, and leave it all out on the floor.
This is a big game for the Cougars in terms of power points. Beating a C-2 school is only going to bolster Lyons-Decatur Northeast's points.
These two teams play again on Tuesday in Lyons so it will be interesting to see who wins round one.
I think the two teams will split their two matchups, but who wins in what order is anyone's guess.
Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. on Thursday.
