Wisner-Pilger Girls upset North Bend Central; fall to Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family
The Wisner-Pilger Girls are 1-1 in their last two games, downing North Bend Central 51-45 at home in overtime Thursday night before losing 47-34 Friday night to Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family in the East Husker Conference Tournament in North Bend.
Head Coach Chuck Ross says the Gators have had a lot of close games this season.
"We've lost the same way we won this one, and we didn't play tough enough defense to win the other two games that we should of won. So we've been working on it, and I think our defensive intensity won the game for us."
The Bulldogs jumped on the Gators and led 14-8 after one. Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family outscored Wisner-Pilger 15-6 in the second quarter to take a 29-14 lead into the locker room.
The Bulldogs won the third quarter 7-5 to go up 36-19 after three.
The Gators notched 15 fourth quarter points compared to 11 for Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family.
Wisner-Pilger played well against the Tigers, but didn't have as good a game against the Bulldogs.
The Gators (10-8) take on Lyons-Decatur Northeast (11-6) in a consolation game Thursday night in Wisner.
The Cougars lost 65-56 at Tekamah-Herman Friday night in the East Husker Conference Tournament.
This is a battle between two teams who are getting the most out of themselves, in my opinion.
Lyons-Decatur Northeast has had a mighty fine season while Wisner-Pilger has had a pretty good season in their own right.
These two teams play again on Tuesday in Lyons so it will be interesting to see who wins round one.
It would be a big deal for the Gators to win, especially with the game being on their home floor.
Wisner-Pilger has to be relentless with their attack, and keep applying pressure on the Cougars defensively.
The Gators have to try and wear down Lyons-Decatur Northeast with the Cougars only having nine players on their roster.
Wisner-Pilger has to try and get girls in foul trouble and force Lyons-Decatur Northeast to go to their thin bench.
I'm sure a consolation game isn't the Gators' first choice, but it's still an important game. It still has the significance of a semifinal game, in my opinion.
Thursday's game is set to tip-off at 6:00 p.m.
